Geo Bachelor BAH Rules

Your family lives somewhere else. Which ZIP code sets your housing allowance — and does an exception apply?

Optional — put numbers on it

Fill these in and the answer comes with the actual 2026 rates for both locations, so you can see the gap you would be covering out of pocket.

The rule in one line, and its three exceptions

BAH follows the duty station ZIP code — not where your family lives. That is the default, and for a voluntary geographic bachelor it is the whole answer. Three things can change it:

  • Unaccompanied or dependent-restricted overseas tours. The rule flips: you are generally authorized the with-dependents rate based on your dependents’ location, while the government houses you overseas.
  • Secretarial hardship waivers. The service Secretaries can authorize BAH at the dependents’ location for documented hardship — a family member’s medical care that cannot move, for example. Not automatic: you apply through your chain of command, and until it is approved your rate stays keyed to the duty station.
  • Government quarters. A member assigned quarters generally forfeits BAH. The main exception is a member authorized with-dependents BAH to maintain the family household elsewhere while occupying single-type quarters — and that is handled differently across services and installations.

Governing authority: DoD Financial Management Regulation, Volume 7A. Your servicing finance office makes the determination for your situation.

Informational only. Housing allowance determinations are made by your servicing finance office and installation housing office under the DoD FMR Volume 7A and your service’s implementing rules, and the edge cases here genuinely vary between services and installations. Get any exception in writing before you sign for quarters or commit to a household arrangement. Rates shown are the 2026 tables and are estimates.
