GI Bill MHA Proration

Your housing allowance is not paid in neat monthly lumps. This works out what actually lands, and when.

A single in-person class is enough to draw the school’s full MHA rate instead of the online-only rate. That one class is often worth more than the class itself.
The E-5 with-dependents BAH rate at your school’s ZIP code. Look it up in the BAH calculator — pick E-5, with dependents, and your campus ZIP.

Fill in your term dates, MHA rate and credits, then press Calculate My MHA.

Three rules do all the work

  • Every month is 30 days. VA pays a daily rate of monthly MHA ÷ 30, regardless of whether the month has 28, 30 or 31 days. A full month pays 30 days’ worth.
  • Partial months are prorated by day. A term starting on the 26th pays six days in that first month, not a whole one.
  • Rate of pursuit above 50%, or nothing. At exactly half time or below, MHA is $0 — not reduced, zero.

Which is why the first and last checks of a term are always smaller than expected, and why students who plan around a flat monthly figure run short in August and December.

Estimates only. VA pays MHA in arrears based on days certified by your school, so the actual amounts depend on the enrollment dates your School Certifying Official submits rather than on the dates in your catalog. The online-only rate and the tuition figures change every 1 August. Confirm with your School Certifying Official and VA.gov.
