VA Rating Protection Check

See which rating-reduction protections already shield you — and when the next one kicks in.

Count from the effective date of the decision that granted this evaluation — not the date you filed.
For the condition itself, even if the percentage has changed since. This is usually the longer of the two numbers.
Not sure? The Am I Permanent & Total? check reads the signals in your award letters.

Answer the four questions and press Check My Protections. Each VA rating-reduction protection has its own clock, and which ones you have depends entirely on how long you have held the rating — not on how severe it is.

The four clocks

  • Day one — due process. VA can never cut your check without warning you first.
  • 5 years — stabilized rating. One bad exam is no longer enough.
  • 10 years — service connection locked in. It cannot be severed absent fraud.
  • 20 years — the rating floor. Your percentage cannot go below its lowest level in that span.

Informational only, not legal advice, and not a prediction of what VA will do in your case. Protections turn on the exact effective dates in your rating decisions, and the citations here (38 CFR 3.105, 3.343, 3.344, 3.951, 3.957 and 38 USC 1159) are summarized rather than quoted. If you have received a notice of proposed reduction, the deadlines are short — speak to an accredited representative right away.
