Paid when your spouse requires the regular aid and attendance of another person. Payable at ratings of 30% or higher, on top of the with-spouse rate.

How dependent compensation works

  • Dependent additions apply only at a combined rating of 30% or higher. At 10% and 20% everyone receives the same flat rate.
  • A qualifying dependent is a spouse, an unmarried child under 18, a child 18–23 in a qualifying school program, a permanently helpless adult child, or a dependent parent.
  • Every additional child beyond the first adds a fixed amount that rises with your rating.
  • Rates increase each December 1 with the Social Security COLA. The 2027 rates reflect a 3.6% increase effective December 1, 2026, first paid in January 2027.
  • VA disability compensation is not taxable and does not need to be reported as income.
