Yellow Ribbon Calculator

Your school costs more than the GI Bill cap. This works out how much of the gap Yellow Ribbon actually closes.

Yellow Ribbon contributions are set separately for each degree level, and the amounts often differ sharply.
Look yours up in VA’s official Yellow Ribbon school list — it is the only reliable source, it is updated each August, and the amounts change every year.
VA matches this dollar for dollar, so a $12,000 school contribution is worth $24,000 of coverage.
Yellow Ribbon requires the 100% tier. Nothing below it qualifies, at any school.

What it is

The Post-9/11 GI Bill caps what it pays at a private or foreign school. For the 2026–27 rate year that cap is … an academic year. At a school charging $60,000 that leaves a very large hole.

Yellow Ribbon is a voluntary agreement between a school and VA to close some or all of that hole. The school puts in an amount it chooses; VA matches it dollar for dollar. So a $10,000 school contribution removes $20,000 of the gap.

  • Requires the 100% benefit tier — there is no partial version.
  • Public in-state students do not need it: their tuition is uncapped already.
  • Slots are first come, first served and limited in number at most schools.
  • Agreements are renegotiated every year. Last year’s figure is not a promise.

Estimates only. Yellow Ribbon contributions, participation limits and slot counts are set by each school and change every academic year — always confirm the current figure in VA’s official list and with the school’s certifying official before relying on it. This calculator uses the figures you enter; it does not hold a database of school contributions, because a stale figure here would be worse than none.
