Dual Military BAH

Two service members, one household. Who claims the with-dependents rate, and which way round is worth more?

Optional — compare both elections in dollars

Give both members’ grades and duty-station ZIPs and the answer comes with the 2026 rates for each combination, so the election is a decision rather than a guess.

Stationed together? Enter the same ZIP for both.

Three rules that decide every dual-military case

  • You cannot claim each other. A service member is never another service member’s dependent for BAH. Two married members with no children draw two without-dependents rates — which frequently totals more than a single with-dependents rate would.
  • Only one of you claims the children. The same dependents can never be claimed twice. One member draws the with-dependents rate, the other draws without-dependents, and the couple elects which way round.
  • BAH follows each member’s own duty station. Stationed apart, the member who claims the children draws the with-dependents rate at their own duty station — even when the children physically live at the other member’s location.

Governing authority: DoD Financial Management Regulation, Volume 7A. Your servicing finance office processes the election, and the paperwork differs by service.

Informational only. Housing allowance determinations are made by your servicing finance office under the DoD FMR Volume 7A and your service’s implementing rules; custody arrangements in particular create genuine edge cases that are decided case by case. Rates shown are the 2026 tables and are estimates. Report custody and dependency changes promptly — drawing the wrong rate creates a debt you will have to repay.
